Designing for the public realm.

“Public spaces are the glue that holds cities and towns together.”

Master planning for generations.

“First life, then spaces, then buildings – the other way around never works.”
Jan Gehl, Architect

Sustainable urban design.

“Think of a city and what comes to mind? Its streets. If a city’s streets look interesting, the city looks interesting; if they look dull, the city looks dull.”

Jane Jacobs

Select Work

Over 40 years of award winning landscape architecture and urban planning work.

A commitment to quality and building community vitality.

My work focuses on the public realm – the community commons. It includes spaces where people of all backgrounds move, gather, protest, eat, celebrate, and recreate. It should be a safe, resilient, beautiful and equitable place. It should promote unity rather than division. It should honor the pedestrian and the bicyclist. The community commons is a busy place, with many roles to play in a city, town, or neighborhood.

Strengthening cities though excellent public realm planning.

If there is a common thread that weaves through my work, it is my focus on creating engaging, sustainable and livable environments, whether in the public domain or for private clients. I have worked on parks, civic spaces, campuses, streets, waterfronts, plazas, multi-family housing, private homes and the other places and spaces that comprise an inviting, healthy and beautiful city. All are set within the public realm and contribute to the quality of the community commons.

Cities, towns and neighborhoods are complex and dynamic environments. I have spent the majority of my career working to improve them as engaging, resilient and equitable places.

My work generally fits into four disciplines:

Urban Design

Landscape Architecture
